Bill and Alf in Rathmore Road about 1907

Harry PHILPOTT and his sons spent the years between about 1907, when Caroline Emily died, and 1913, when William Charles joined the navy, living in Rathmore Street, Charlton. We have known this for many years, because William Charles always spoke of Rathmore Road (as it became) as home, and told us this photograph was taken in Rathmore Street, probably about 1907 or 1908.

The photograph shows William Charles and his younger brother, Alfred George, standing outside a house in Rathmore Road. When Sarah went to live in Rathmore Road in the 1970s, we all took a turn at trying to make out the number over the door. It would have been a lovely coincidence if she had been buying the very house where her grandfather grew up. But no such luck. The number is too small and dark to make out.

'The Times' online
Many of the articles in 'The Times' online archive concern national events not directly relevant to family history. However, the court reports, then as now, are sometimes fun in a weird kind of way. On one of my many trawls through, looking on this occasion for references to 'Great Waltham', Essex, I found a weird and amusing piece about the Great Waltham poorhouse, dating from 1829. Names are mentioned, but they are not related to Edwina's Family Tree. Look under the VIEW ARTICLES section, where I have posted this article. My own title for it is, 'We Want To Work', because it had no title when it originally appeared in 'The Times'.
