On this site you will find a selection of faces from the past. The black and white photographs were mostly taken before 1925, and they show people from various branches of Edwina's family tree.

Edwina's research is ongoing... and looks as if it will never end. In the meantime, the site will try to keep up-to-date with the state of research so far. I shall post interesting snippets of information as I find them, and I shall add longer articles or more photos when I have time.

The picture on this page is of George (alias Toby) PHILPOTT. Click the 'PHILPOTT' button on the 'SURNAMES' menu, and then browse around the articles to find out more about his photograph. George has been tricky to research, but I have recently managed to find two possible-looking christenings in the Canterbury area in 1830, one of which might be his.

Read the articles about William HARLING in the 'PHILPOTT' section. George's wife's brother was the closest we have so far to a skeleton in the family cupboard!

Some ancestors, such as Henry CHURCH (see 'CHURCH' section) and Caroline Emily BUTLER (see 'PHILPOTT' section) are proving very hard to research. Any members of the public who happen to sight either of these individuals - please let us know!

The Irish connection is making some progress. Things are slow, but at least we now know the McGRATHs and SHINES were in London by 1858, and that the SHINEs, at least, had come from Clonmel, County Tipperary.

Most of our latest updates are based on information from the newly released 1911 census. It seems strange to be researching people who were still with us until comparatively recently.

'The Times' online
Many of the articles in 'The Times' online archive concern national events not directly relevant to family history. However, the court reports, then as now, are sometimes fun in a weird kind of way. On one of my many trawls through, looking on this occasion for references to 'Great Waltham', Essex, I found a weird and amusing piece about the Great Waltham poorhouse, dating from 1829. Names are mentioned, but they are not related to Edwina's Family Tree. Look under the VIEW ARTICLES section, where I have posted this article. My own title for it is, 'We Want To Work', because it had no title when it originally appeared in 'The Times'.
